In Book of Mormon class we were discussing the stripling warriors and this led to a discussion of women. Bro. Griffen recommended that we all read this talk. I did as he asked and read it. It is an amazing talk and I want to share it. It was given in the April 1978 General Conference.

The Women of God

NEAL A. MAXWELL
Of the Presidency of the Seventy

Neal A. Maxwell
We know so little, brothers and sisters, about the reasons for the division of duties between womanhood and manhood as well as between motherhood and priesthood. These were divinely determined in another time and another place. We are accustomed to focusing on the men of God because theirs is the priesthood and leadership line. But paralleling that authority line is a stream of righteous influence reflecting the remarkable women of God who have existed in all ages and dispensations, including our own. Greatness is not measured by coverage in column inches, either in newspapers or in the scriptures. The story of the women of God, therefore, is, for now, an untold drama within a drama.
We men know the women of God as wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, associates, and friends. You seem to tame us and to gentle us, and, yes, to teach us and to inspire us. For you, we have admiration as well as affection, because righteousness is not a matter of role, nor goodness a matter of gender. In the work of the Kingdom, men and women are not without each other, but do not envy each other, lest by reversals and renunciations of role we make a wasteland of both womanhood and manhood.
Just as certain men were foreordained from before the foundations of the world, so were certain women appointed to certain tasks. Divine design—not chance—brought Mary forward to be the mother of Jesus. The boy prophet, Joseph Smith, was blessed not only with a great father but also with a superb mother, Lucy Mack, who influenced a whole dispensation.
When we would measure loving loyalty in a human relationship, do we not speak of Ruth and Naomi even more than David and Jonathan? And no wonder God with His perfect regard for women is so insistent about our obligations to widows.
A widow with her mite taught us how to tithe. An impoverished and starving widow with her hungry son taught us how to share, as she gave her meal and oil to Elijah. The divine maternal instincts of an Egyptian woman retrieved Moses from the bullrushes, thereby shaping history and demonstrating how a baby is a blessing—not a burden.
What greater conversation of anticipation has there been than that of Elisabeth and Mary when also the babe in Elisabeth leaped in recognition of Mary? (Luke 1:41).
Does it not tell us much about the intrinsic intelligence of women to read of the crucifixion scene at Calvary, “And many women were there beholding afar off.” (Matt. 27:55.) Their presence was a prayer; their lingering was like a litany.
And who came first to the empty tomb of the risen Christ? Two women.
Who was the first mortal to see the resurrected Savior? Mary of Magdala. Special spiritual sensitivity keeps the women of God hoping long after many others have ceased.
The charity of good women is such that their “love makes no parade”; they are not glad “when others go wrong”; they are too busy serving to sit statusfully about, waiting to be offended. Like Mary, they ponder trustingly those puzzlements that disable others. God trusts women so much that He lets them bear and care for His spirit children.
In our modern kingdom, it is no accident that women were, through the Relief Society, assigned compassionate service. So often the service of women seems instinctive, while that of some men seems more labored. It is precisely because the daughters of Zion are so uncommon that the adversary will not leave them alone.
We salute you, sisters, for the joy that is yours as you rejoice in a baby’s first smile and as you listen with eager ear to a child’s first day at school which bespeaks a special selflessness. Women, more quickly than others, will understand the possible dangers when the word self is militantly placed before other words like fulfillment. You rock a sobbing child without wondering if today’s world is passing you by, because you know you hold tomorrow tightly in your arms.
So often our sisters comfort others when their own needs are greater than those being comforted. That quality is like the generosity of Jesus on the cross. Empathy during agony is a portion of divinity!
I thank the Father that His Only Begotten Son did not say in defiant protest at Calvary, “My body is my own!” I stand in admiration of women today who resist the fashion of abortion, by refusing to make the sacred womb a tomb!
When the real history of mankind is fully disclosed, will it feature the echoes of gunfire or the shaping sound of lullabies? The great armistices made by military men or the peacemaking of women in homes and in neighborhoods? Will what happened in cradles and kitchens prove to be more controlling than what happened in congresses? When the surf of the centuries has made the great pyramids so much sand, the everlastingfamily will still be standing, because it is a celestial institution, formed outside telestial time. The women of God know this.
No wonder the men of God support and sustain you sisters in your unique roles, for the act of deserting home in order to shape society is like thoughtlessly removing crucial fingers from an imperiled dike in order to teach people to swim.
We men love you for meeting inconsiderateness with consideration and selfishness with selflessness. We are touched by the eloquence of your example. We are deeply grateful for your enduring us as men when we are not at our best because—like God—you love us not only for what we are, but for what we have the power to become.
We have special admiration for the unsung but unsullied single women among whom are some of the noblest daughters of God. These sisters know that God loves them, individually and distinctly. They make wise career choices even though they cannot now have the most choice career. Though in their second estate they do not have their first desire, they still overcome the world. These sisters who cannot now enrich the institution of their own marriage so often enrich other institutions in society. They do not withhold their blessings simply because some blessings are now withheld from them. Their trust in God is like that of the wives who are childless, but not by choice, but who in the justice of God will receive special blessings one day.
I, along with my brethren of the priesthood, express undying gratitude to our eternal partners. We know that we can go no place that matters without you, nor would we have it otherwise. When we kneel to pray, we kneel together. When we kneel at the altar of the holy temple, we kneel together. When we approach the final gate where Jesus Himself is the gatekeeper, we will, if faithful, pass through that gate together.
The prophet who sits with us today could tell us of such togetherness, when at the time of his overwhelming apostolic calling he was consoled by his Camilla, who met his anguished, sobbing sense of inadequacy and, running her fingers through his hair, said, “You can do it, you can do it.” He surely has done it, but with her at his side.
Notice, brethren, how all the prophets treat their wives and honor women, and let us do likewise!
Finally, remember: When we return to our real home, it will be with the “mutual approbation” of those who reign in the “royal courts on high.” There we will find beauty such as mortal “eye hath not seen”; we will hear sounds of surpassing music which mortal “ear hath not heard.” Could such a regal homecoming be possible without the anticipatory arrangements of a Heavenly Mother?
Meanwhile, there are no separate paths back to that heavenly home. Just one straight and narrow way, at the end of which, though we arrive trailing tears, we shall at once be “drenched in joy.” I so testify in the name ofJesus Christ. Amen.

Weekend

On friday,I had the opportunity to go sledding with some people from my ward. I am so grateful that Antonella could invite me. It made my day.

On Saturday we went to do baptisms at the Mount Timpanogos temple. I had never been to that temple before. It took us just under 2 hours to do 3 names. There was a lot of youth doing family names which made me really happy. Sister Oldroyd and I have arranged to get started this coming week. I can not wait to get started!

God's Hand in My Life

I wasn't going to do another post today, but with all that has happened I feel like I need to.

I had an interesting experience today that really made me pause and reflect. I would like to briefly share it.

I was sitting in the WILK reading my scriptures for Book of Mormon class when a shorter black man walked by. He saw me reading the scriptures and made some comment that I couldn't quite catch, as it became evident his english was not superior. He then pointed to the Canadian pin on my backpack and asked if I was Canadian. I replied yes. He immediately sat down at my booth and claimed how much he loved Canadians and that he had a few questions to ask me. By now I still was struggling to understand him; consequently, all I could do was nod my head. He explained briefly how he was frustrated with Americans. He came from Kenya to BYU and was struggling to fit in with American culture. He explained how they have centers to teach you english and they even have places to teach them how to drive. However, there is no place to teach them American culture. In other words, he wasn't sure how to act. It sounds simple but he explained that the way people conduct themselves here is very different from what he is used to. He explained that he is in the Business program and is required to wear professional attire; therefore, he wears a suit most of the time. He continued to explain how certain people would always compliment him when he dressed up. He observed that as a way of American culture. So, trying to be just like everybody else, when he saw this particular woman dressed up nice he complimented her on it. Turns out though that this woman took it as he was hitting on her, and was very weirded out. He explained how frustrated he was because he was just doing what he saw others do and didn't mean any harm at all, but rather he was just trying to fit in. He explained how it didn't help that he could barely speak english and that he was black. It was clear that he was really troubled. He wants so badly to fit in, but just doesn't know how. He then went on a rant about racism and slavery and how people still have a hard time both accepting and trusting black people. I have to admit that if someone just like him kept coming up to me and complimenting me  I would immediately label them as a creep and stay far away. I feel so bad for him. He is trying so hard. He asked me some questions concerning Canada which I answered to the best of my ability. Then I did my best to restore his hope and faith with what advice I could muster and then he was on his way.

This experience really made me consider how I perceive people. I have no right to judge anybody based on appearance. I have no idea what people are struggling with nor do I know their intentions. What I am trying to get across is that I cannot judge anybody based on their appearance. I need to treat everyone as they are sons and daughters of God. I need to take the time to get to know people. I also need to treat everyone with respect because other people have different values and opinons then me. Everyone has a different worldview that I most likely do not understand and I need to accept that. I am grateful for this experience. I hope I can try harder to respect everyone. I want everyone I come into contact with to leave better and happier then they did before.

Today I have also looked back on the week and have indeed seen God's hand in my life. Mostly, I see it in the people he has placed in my life.

Kellyanne: We are in the same organ class. What a good example of integrity and virtue! When we first met I thought she was a sophomore. Turns out she is a senior graduating in april with a dance degree and she has served a mission! She is 26! She certainly does not look 26! I am learning so much from her.

Leanne: She is in my weight training class, she is my partner this semester for the DAP program, not to mention she is a twin! Can you say clean sweep?! Both her, her twin sister Lisa, and her brother are in my weight training class. I love them all. It is clear that they are all very close and really trust each other. Leanne is also a dietetics major so we have many of the same classes. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to know her. We will be spending a lot of time together this semester between DAP and weight training.

Kjersten: Thanks for the hug today. I needed it!

Ashley: She is in the apartment next door and the Relief Society teacher. She is such an example to me. The love of the Lord shines through her eyes! You can't help but want to be better when you are around her.

Ryan: Thanks for the conversation we had in NDFS 100 today. I needed that.

Kelly: One of the PD directors for DAP. She is a senior in the dietetics program. She is beautiful inside and out. She is really tall and quite thin to, like me. I look at her and see the potential I have to one day be in her shoes. She is a great example and I look up to her a lot.

I am so grateful for each and everyone of these individuals. I know that God placed them in my life. I can learn so much from each one. They are helping me become the person God wants me to be.

I am so grateful to be here at BYU! I know I say it over and over but I just love it so much. Between all of my classes, devotionals, firesides, and church meetings, I literally am always thinking about the Gospel. I feel closer to the spirit and the Savior more than I ever have. I feel his hand guiding my life. I sense myself growing and changing. I am starting to realize what a crucial time of my life this is. The decisions I make now, the talents I develop, the skills and knowledge I learn will all influence my future. I know BYU is not at all what the real world is like. I will leave and face the hardest challenges of my life. I will encounter temptation that I have never before experienced. However, I know that if I make the right choices now, I will be ready to face anything. I must continue to build a strong foundation. I know that lately all of my posts seem to be about church related things and if you don't like that I am sorry. But you have to understand that the gospel is becoming a part of me. It is becoming the center and focus of my life which it never really was before. I feel so close to the Savior. I share all of this because I know that there will be times when I will struggle and question and I want to always remember how I feel when I live close to the spirit. It is a feeling like no other! Melissa, never do anything that will withdraw the spirit! Never ever! I know I am not perfect. In fact, I am the farthest thing from perfect. This humbles me. It makes me see all of the ways I can grow and develop. There are so many things that the Lord shows me each and everyday that I need to work on in order to be a more effective servant. I know he will help me. I love the Lord with all my heart. I know he has a plan for me. I want to reach my potential. I want to fulfill the mission he has sent me here to do.

Time is Precious

We had a terrible tragedy in our ward this weekend. A sister was moving into her apartment with the help of her mother. However, it wasn't long and the mother collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital after suffering a severe heart attack. She died the next morning. We were all shocked at the news, as our hearts went out to this girl and her family. We started a ward fast for her and her family. I am praying for a blessing of comfort and peace to be with them. When people go suddenly it really puts life in perspective. I am so glad that I have the knowledge of life after death and eternal families. I don't know where I would be without it. I hope each day I can try a little harder to do a little better. I don't know when the Lord will call me home, but I want to be ready.

On Saturday we went to Jess's house in Cedar Hills in the afternoon. It was so nice to get away from the apartment for a while and be in a real home. Jess has an awesome family. It is evident that their home is one of trust, love, and humor. I love the way they so easily talk and joke with one another. We played in the snow for a little bit, had soup and then played a few games. It was relaxing and nice way to de-stress from school.

Lexie and Saydi. Two of the classiest girls out there.

There were a few icebergs on the trampoline.

Jess, Lexie, Saydi, and I

With spending time at Jess's home and the tragedy of the sister in our ward I was really missing my family saturday night. I called and talked to my parents and that made me feel better. I love my family so much and don't ever want to do anything that would jeopardize our eternal family. I hope they can always be my closest friends. I love them all so much; it is really hard being away from home, but I know this is where I need to be.

Tonight was a CES fireside that was held at the Marriott Center here on campus. President Uchtdorf was the speaker. Elder Russell M. Nelson was present as well. I went two hours early in attempt for a good seat. I ended up having to wait in line outside in the cold for half an hour until they opened the doors. It all worked out and was worth it when I was able to get 7th row seats. We could see President Uchtdorf perfectly. I love hearing general authorities speak. They speak with such conviction and love. Pres. Uchtdorf talked about truth. The importance of both recognizing and seeking truth in this troubled wicked world. Before it started he came out with his wife and grandson just to say hi to us all and talk for a few minutes. He is really funny and was cracking jokes. I am glad I got to see that side of him as well. Seeing him interact with his wife was also a choice sight. They have a love that is different then what you see in the world. It is an eternal love and it is beautiful. The way they were constantly touching either holding hands or a gentle hand on her back. He also often would just pick up her hand and kiss it. It is so precious. I hope I can have that kind of relationship with my spouse. I know it takes years and years of work and experience. It is worth it though, for it is truly the type of love that lasts well into the next life and on to forever.

I am so grateful for the experiences I am having. Each one shapes and refines me into the person God wants me to be.

Winter Semester

I made it through my first day of winter semester. I am very excited because so far I really love all of my classes. I am taking 16.5 credits. Although I am looking forward to each of my classes, I am worried because each one requires such a heavy workload. Here are the classes I am taking:

Music 115 intro to organ-- I really want to do well in this class as I feel it will be really beneficial for me both now and in the future. It requires 3 hours of study and 3 hours of practice per week.

American Heritage-- I am excited to learn about american government and history. There are a lot of negative connotations surrounding this class, so I hope I can stay motivated and determined. It requires a TON of readings.

Chem 285-- This class is every day of the week. It covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. There is homework everyday, reading to keep up on, and mastering chemistries to complete.

Weight Training-- I am so glad I decided to take this class. While waiting to go into it, I was freaking out a little bit. I just couldn't help but picture all these big buff good looking guys and then me. Ya talk about awkward. Luckily, it was quite the opposite. In fact, most of the class consists of girls. Wahoo what a relief. The teacher seems really nice and chill and well. He is a graduate student and seems to really know his stuff. I hope this class will be more fun then work and that I can put forth a lot of effort to succeed.

Book of Mormon part 2-- I haven't had this class yet but am excited for it to begin. I have brother Griffen this semester and I hear he is one of the best. I am worried though because it requires reading 35 pages of scholarly material and then writing a paper as well as a semester long 10 week project. It will be a lot of work, but I know it will be worth it. I will get out of it what I put into it.

NDFS 100 (nutriton)-- I cannot wait for this class to begin! I have already read some of the readings and they are just what I love. I know the teacher is so smart as she is the head of the dietetics apartment. I hope I can get to know her personally.

STDV-- This is a student leadership development leadership class. I felt like I should take it as  lately I have really been thinking about the talents in my patriarchal blessing that states I have the ability to "teach, lead, and guide". I felt like this class would greatly assist me in doing just that. It is a relatively small class. I haven't have it yet but from the outline it looks as though once a week we have influential guest speakers come and then the other day we talk about how we apply what the speaker talked about. We also have to have blogs to talk about different leadership aspects. I am excited for it to begin. I think it will be a very beneficial course.

It will be a hard semester, but the blessing that my Dad gave me right before I left gives me hope. He said that the classes I am taking now will help me fulfill my life mission. It brings me such peace to know that these are the classes I am supposed to take right now. I know that it will be a hard semester. Not that the classes are necessary hard, but rather each one demands so much time. I will have to work very hard on time management. That is ok though because that is one of my goals anyways. I hope to work hard and experience an immense amount of growth this semester.

Lexy and Jess have made a Health "contract" for the new semester that they started today. Another thing that I like is that almost everyone has to be out the door by 7:40. This is nice because hopefully we can all go to bed earlier and the house will be a lot quieter at night so I can sleep easier. I quickly learned last semester that if I don't get enough sleep I don't do well. It seems as though almost everyone in our apartment is on a health kick. This makes me happy although it means our fridge is full to the brim. When everyone else eats healthy it makes it a lot easier for me to stick to my own goals as well. I hope we can all help each other out. I know that if we take the time to exercise, eat healthy, and get enough sleep that we will be able to accomplish things beyond our imaginations.

A Brand New Year

I recently wrote my goals for 2013 in my journal but wanted to post them here as well with the intent that it will both help me to remember my goals and work hards towards accomplishing them.

I have two themes for this year

1. "We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day."
       Richard G. Scott

This year I want to work hard at living each day, hour, minute, and moment in pursuit of my dreams and the person that the Lord wants me to be. I want this quote to be engraven into my mind and heart.

2. "Never, ever delay a prompting from the Holy Ghost!"

One of my biggest regrets from 2012 is that there were times when I would postpone or ignore a prompting from the Holy Ghost. My goal this year is to act IMMEDIATELY on any and every prompting I receive.

Fitness/Health goals
-no processed junk food! ex. anything packaged such as candy bars, gummy candies, mini eggs, chips etc.
-run a 1/2 marathon
-exercise and eat healthy CONSISTENTLY
-exercise at a higher intensity
-gain weight in muscle

Spiritual goals
-temple once a week
-get up early and study the scriptures
-do things that will strengthen my testimony
-meaningful prayers morning and night
-meaningful daily scripture/gospel study

Personal goals
-be more confident and assured in myself
-take more time for the piano
-be more closer to my family
-be more spontaneous
-develop lasting friendships
-be a better communicator

Academic goals
-A's in every class
-better and more personal relationship with my teachers

It is my hope this year to prayerfully seek the Lords help in accomplishing these goals. I know it won't be easy. In fact, it will be the hardest thing I ever do. Time is running out. The Lord needs me. He needs me now. The time to prepare will soon be over.

 Don't Delay!
It is getting late.

Come What May is Published

Katelyn gave me a precious gift for Christmas that finally arrived today. It is a book of all my blog posts! I love it so much. It is just like a journal. It will a wonderful thing for my kids to have that shows what my life was like. Thank Kate!

Seeing how nice this book is with my pictures and thoughts really makes me question if I want to keep a written journal to. Either I could continue doing both, or keep everything in one place by doing one or the other? I am unsure of what to do. . . I will figure it out soon. I think I will keep keeping a journal, as I was prompted to do that and know I need to keep hand writing my experiences for the time being.

Sometimes We Gamble. . .

A few nights ago we played Rummoli as  family. Dad even played which was quite a miracle, as he hardly ever plays games with us. For a Rookie Dad sure did good. He probably had the most chips the entire night. It was fun; I really enjoy playing games with my family. It is a good way to spend time with each other and have fun.

Dad is rockin' the reading glasses.

It is has been so much fun to spend time with my entire family over the Holidays. I love each one of them so much. They are all such a strength and example to me. I can't wait to have a family of my own and establish our own traditions. I can't wait to teach them Gospel and raise them in righteousness. I know I must prepare each and every day in order for this to happen. I am so grateful for the family Heavenly Father blessed me with. They will help me be prepared for my own family. I love my family so much. Families are everything and spending time together is truly how we can feel close to both Heaven and Heavenly Father.

Happy Birthday Mom

Mom turns 49 on January 7. Since all of us kids will be back to school then, we celebrated tonight. Echo and I spent ALL day decorating. Literally. I made cup cakes in the morning along with a banner, frosted the cupcakes in the afternoon as well as decorated the kitchen, and finally made dinner. It doesn't sound like a lot but it is all very, very time consuming. I had fun doing it though, especially spending the time with Echo and getting to know her better. She is such a beautiful girl inside and out. I have yet to hear her say anything negative and I doubt I ever will. I have a new appreciation for all of the hard work my Mom puts into our birthdays. It also made me very excited for my own family. I can't wait to make the holidays special for them by decorating and doing fun activities.

Decorations done by Echo and I.

I was so proud of this banner!! I made it and Echo wrote the letters on it. It turned out so well. Maybe I can be creative. . . if I try.

The cupcakes Echo and I decorated. This I still need much practice at.

Getting dinner all ready--Idaho tacos.

Singing Happy Birthday. (Bradley DeForest is in the background. Aunt Pam and him came down to help clean Grandma's house)

New hiking backpack for Mom.

Happy Birthday Mom! I love you.

Sometimes I am Silly. . . but Only Sometimes
